Abolitionist Collective Reading Group Launch

Friday, February 6, 2026 @ 4:00 pm - 5:30 pm

Reading group announcement featuring various pieces of art. Top is from the cover of Black Reconstruction and depicts a group of Black men politicking after the passage of the Fifteenth Amendment. Bottom left is an abstract representation of the life of Nat Turner, who led a slave rebellion in Virginia in 1831, by Christopher Myers. Bottom right is Timothy Sullivan’s photograph of some of the first freed men, women, and children; scholar Nicholas Mirzoeff identifies this as emblematic of the General Strike.

AC@B is starting to read Black Reconstruction by W.E.B. Du Bois! We’ll alternate weekly between this text and other various material.

For our first meeting, we’re reading

  • Black Reconstruction, ch. XVII, “The Propaganda of History”
  • Excerpts from Walter Benjamin’s Theses on the Philosophy of History

All readings are available here.
