Friday, December 5, 2025 @ 8:30 am - 1:30 pm

Event flyer for A Convening on Science, Democracy, and the Environment: Developing a Community of Practice for Strategy and Action. Cosponsored by UC Berkeley Edley Center on Law & Democracy and UC Berkeley Center for Law, Energy & the Environment. December 5, 2025. 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at International House, UC Berkeley. Also available via livestream. Keynote speakers: Wade Crowfoot, Secretary of California Natural Resources Agency; Liane Randolph, Former Chair of California Air Resources Board; and Martha Guzman Aceves, Former Regional Administrator, US EPA Region 9.

Recent attacks on science and scientific integrity are attacks on democracy itself. Recent cuts to funding and government research entities, and disregard for evidence in decision-making are putting science’s role in a democracy at risk. Undermining science strips governments of the ability to anticipate disasters, protect communities, and address environmental challenges–now and in the future. And weakening science erodes the shared foundation of knowledge that enables civil discourse and informed decision-making.

To meet this moment, the Center for Law, Energy, and the Environment and the Edley Center on Law and Democracy at Berkeley Law are hosting a convening to ask critical questions, including:

  • What does society need to do to protect scientific integrity?
  • Are there silver linings and opportunities amidst the current efforts to undermine science?
  • What actions can government, the private sector, and the academy take to rebuild trust?
  • What new models for the scientific enterprise could increase scientific legitimacy?

This event will bring together scientists, agency leaders, and advocates to explore how science supports a healthy democracy and to assess the threats posed by recent developments—focusing on environmental action.

Keynote speakers include Secretary of the California Natural Resources Agency, Wade Crowfoot; former Regional Administrator for US EPA Region 9, Martha Guzman Aceves; and former California Air Resources Board Chair, Liane Randolph.

Morning refreshments and lunch will be provided. In-person attendance is limited to registered attendees.

Cosponsored by the Center for Law, Energy, and the Environment & Edley Center on Law and Democracy.
