Please join the Center on Reproductive Rights and Justice (CRRJ — pronounced courage) for its inaugural CRRJeous Conversation, which will focus on the topic of Black Maternal Mortality. Using the brain-trust model, come workshop with us and our speakers as we come up with creative solutions to the important issue of black maternal mortality.

FEATURED SPEAKERS

Michele Bratcher Goodwin is a Chancellor’s Professor of Law and founding director of the Center for Biotechnology and Global Health Policy at UC Irvine. She is also faculty in the Stem Cell Research Center; Gender and Sexuality Studies Department; Program in Public Health; and the Department of Criminology, Law, & Society. She is an elected member of the American Law Institute as well as an elected Fellow of the American Bar Foundation and the Hastings Center. Professor Goodwin has been a Visiting Professor at the University of Chicago and University of Virginia law schools.  A nationally recognized advocate for civil liberties and civil rights, she serves on the executive committee and national board of the American Civil Liberties Union. Professor Goodwin has won national awards for excellence in scholarship, outstanding teaching and committed community service. Gov. Paul Patton of Kentucky commissioned her as a colonel, the state’s highest title of honor. In 2018 she was bestowed the Sandra Day O’Connor Legacy Award by the Women’s Journey Foundation. That same year, Professor Goodwin was named teacher of the year by the Thurgood Marshall Bar Association. She is a highly sought after voice on civil liberties, civil rights, reproductive rights and justice, and cultural politics. Prior to teaching law, she was a Gilder-Lehrman Post-Doctoral Fellow at Yale University.

Dr. Karen A. Scott is an assistant adjunct professor in the UC San Francisco’s Family Health Care Nursing Department and Director of the California Birth Equity Collaborative, a new hospital-based quality improvement initiative under the California Maternal Quality Care Collaborative to transform birth culture, care, and experiences for, by, and with Black mothers and birthing people through collaborations with Black women led CBOs and community-hospital partnerships.  She is a Reproductive Justice (RJ) informed obstetric epidemiologist, educator, and OB hospitalist, and her work is accomplished through the application of a RJ praxis in sexual and reproductive health education and health service provision. Dr. Scott’s clinical and research interests include the analysis of individual, institutional, and structural factors that inform health care quality and utilization, focusing on equitable patient-provider and community-hospital partnerships and shared decision making. 

Dr. Monica McLemore is an assistant professor in the Family Health Care Nursing Department at UC San Francisco, an affiliated scientist with Advancing New Standards in Reproductive Health, and a member of the Bixby Center for Global Reproductive Health. She maintains a clinical practice as a public health and staff nurse at Zuckerberg San Francisco General in the Women’s Options Center. Her program of research is focused on understanding reproductive health and justice. She has 47 peer-reviewed articles, op eds and commentaries, and her research has been cited in the Huffington Post, Lavender Health, two amicus briefs to the US Supreme Court, and a National Academies of Science, Engineering, and Medicine report. Her work has appeared in publications such as Dame Magazine, Politico, ProPublica/NPR and she made a voice appearance in Terrance Nance’s HBO series Random Acts of Flyness. Her work will be published in the 2019 Future of Medicine edition of Scientific American as a data visualization project entitled How To Fix Maternal Mortality: The First Step is to stop blaming women. She is an elected member of the governing council for Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) section of the American Public Health Association and is incoming chair-elect of the SRH section. She currently serves on the board of Centering Health Care International, the Abortion Care Network, and Lady Parts Justice League and the advisory committee for the Institute for Health Care Improvement and the March of Dimes. She is a recipient of the 2015 teaching award from the American College of Nurse Midwives and one of 10 Culture of Health, Breakthrough Leaders in Nursing – a program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, AARP, and the Center to Champion Nursing in America. In 2018, Dr. McLemore received the person of the year award from the Abortion Care Network and in May, 2019 she will receive the Thomas N. Burnbridge Chancellor’s Award for Public Service at UCSF.
