Presentation about how DRM-based content delivery systems disrupt expectations of personal use.

Clinic Director Deirdre Mulligan, along with John Han and Aaron Burstein, presented “How DRM-Based Content Delivery Systems Disrupt Expectations of ‘Personal Use’” at the 2003 ACM Workshop on Digital Rights Management. A study was conducted to see whether DRM-based online music and movie distributors accord with consumer expectations when it comes to personal use of copyrighted material. The behavior of six music and two film online distributors were studied, with the conclusion that there are more restrictions when one rents or purchases CDs, DVDs and videocassettes online compared to physically renting or purchasing. The paper provides legal as well as technological considerations in order to assist DRM systems in accommodating consumer preferences.
