Job Opportunity: Hiring Research Assistants for Professor Catherine Crump

Professor Catherine Crump is seeking research assistants to work on a variety of projects related to government surveillance. One project focuses on the role of federal money in accelerating municipal law enforcement agencies’ adoption of surveillance technology, and the impact that path to acquisition is having on democratic control of police departments. Another focuses on the use of predictive algorithms in law enforcement investigations and in decision making regarding who is entitled to probation or parole. A third focuses on the impact of surveillance technology on the First Amendment right of association. Research tasks include legal research into relevant First and Fourth Amendment case law, researching relevant bodies of scholarly literature, factual research into municipal policies and procedures, and use of state and federal public records laws.

If you are interested, please send your cover letter and resume to Clinical Program Associate Administrator, Olivia Layug at olayug@law.berkeley.edu by Tuesday, September 15.

The job involves researching case law and academic literature on an important legal/policy issue that has been center stage in the world of tech patent litigation for the past few years. Pay is above the usual GSR rate, and can be negotiated with Prof. Merges. The project will probably take 10-15 hours of concerted effort each week for eight to ten weeks; it may continue after that time with follow-on projects, depending on the company’s level of interest.

Submission Opportunity: Entertainment Law Initiative Writing Competition

The Entertainment Law Initiative (ELI) Writing Competition invites law students to write a 3000 word paper about a compelling issue facing today’s music industry.  Winners of the competition have gone on to significant careers in the music industry and credit ELI as a significant part of their success. The competition prizes include financial awards, including all expenses paid trips for the contest winners to attend GRAMMY Week events, including the GRAMMY Telecast.  The winning papers are also featured at the prestigious Entertainment Law Initiative Luncheon which is attended by 500 of the most prominent entertainment attorneys in the country.  Winners of the competition have gone on to successful careers practicing in the entertainment industry.  I’ve attached a copy of the competition rules for your review.

ELI Writing Competition Workshops:

As part of ELI, the GRAMMY Foundation holds writing workshops at select law schools across the country.  These workshops serve as a means of demystifying the competition but also an opportunity to connect with noted attorneys associated with the competition.   Students will receive guidance on crafting a successful submission, and find out what it’s like to practice law within the entertainment community.  I would welcome the opportunity to discuss this in further detail.
