While California requires Web sites doing business in the state to post a privacy policy, many residents don’t realize that the statements don’t protect them against several key privacy problems, according to a survey released Wednesday by the Samuelson Law, Technology and Public Policy Clinic at UC Berkeley.
Often, a privacy policy is merely a statement that a company collects and shares your personal information, like your name, address, telephone number and Social Security number, said Chris Hoofnagle, a senior staff attorney.
