Berkeley Law scholars who have published books over the past year were recently honored at the annual “Author’s Prandium” reception inside the Bancroft Hotel. Hosted by Professor Robert Berring ’74, the gathering showcased a diverse range of issues covered by faculty members—and a list of tongue-in-cheek awards bestowed by Berring.
Professor and Director of Professional Skills David Oppenheimer received Berring’s “True Grit Award” for The Great Dissents of the ‘Lone Dissenter.’ The book is a collection of essays about former California Supreme Court Justice Jesse Carter, who was raised in a log cabin and authored more than 500 dissenting opinions.
Berring bestowed a “Generous Heart Award” to Professor Cathernie Albiston for Institutional Inequality and the Mobilization of the Family and Medical Leave Act: Rights on Leave. “She thanks over 50 people,” Berring noted, “including her husband, who she says did the laundry, the cooking, and child care while she worked on the book. In light of the title, that’s pretty wonderful.”
Lecturer in Residence Henry Hecht, who wrote the 2nd edition of Effective Depositions, garnered Berring’s “Cheers Cup” for “hanging out with the Bar.”
Berkeley Law Domestic Violence Practicum Director Nancy Lemon ’80 claimed Berring’s annual “Heavyweight Champion Casebook” honor for Domestic Violence, which checked in at 1,355 pages and 5.2 pounds.
Professor Andrew Guzman, Berkeley Law’s director of Graduate Programs and associate dean for International and Executive Education, received a figurative “Tommy Hilfiger Sash” for “classiest cover design.” Prominent graphic designer Eduardo Nemeth produced the art for Cooperation, Comity, and Competition Policy, which Guzman edited.
