About the Berkeley Technology Law Journal

June 2019

Dear Transfer Students:

Welcome to Berkeley Law! On behalf of the Berkeley Technology Law Journal (BTLJ), I write to encourage you to join the country’s premier technology law publication by participating in our write-on competition or by becoming a general member.

BTLJ is the most-cited technology law journal in the country, regularly publishing cutting-edge scholarship by preeminent scholars on a range of topics, including intellectual property, cyber law, and biotechnology. One of the largest student journals at Berkeley Law, BTLJ also strives to provide a platform for student publication. The Annual Review issue is dedicated to student-written notes on the hottest topics in intellectual property and technology law.

Each year, BTLJ offers transfer students the opportunity to join the journal’s Editorial Board as an Articles Editor through the write-on competition. This competition mimics the editing process, asking prospective editors to complete a primary, line, and bluebook edit on a small portion of an article. Applicants are also required to submit a resume and brief personal statement.

The Articles Editor position entails working with other Editorial Board members and managing a team of general members to edit academic articles for publication in our Fall and Spring issues. As an Articles Editor, you can expect to work at least 60 hours per semester, and you are eligible to receive up to two units of academic credit for your participation. Serving as an Articles Editor also positions transfer students to run for election to BTLJ’s Executive Board in the Spring semester. Past transfer students have gone on to serve as Editor-in-Chief, Senior Online Content Editor, and Senior Articles Editor in their third year. As we consider our personnel needs in the Fall, we may also extend offers to serve in other Editorial Board positions. These positions tend to be less time intensive than Article Editors but still offer a great opportunity to get involved with the BTLJ community—one of the most active at Boalt. The write-on process is the same for all positions, so we encourage you to participate.

The write-on competition will be administered from July 14 through July 21, 2019.  For more information about the competition, or about potential positions, please contact me at courtneyreed@berkeley.edu

If you are not interested in becoming an Editorial Board member, I still encourage you to join as a general member. This commitment entails 20-30 hours of work per semester and does not require you to write-on. While the journal focuses on technology law, it is also a great place to make friends, start an intramural sports team, and enjoy free lunches and talks. For more information about general membership, please contact Aislinn Smalling, Managing Editor, at ansmalling@berkeley.edu

I hope you will join us and be a part of the nation’s leading technology law journal!

Warm regards,

Courtney Reed (Senior Articles Editor)
