Computer Information

Welcome!  On behalf of everyone who works on technology and computer support issues, welcome to Berkeley Law!  We are continuously exploring innovative ways of utilizing technology to enhance your legal education and working to improve computer-related services.  We need your cooperation to effectively implement these services.

CalNet ID
Your CalNet ID is your key to accessing many critical online services during your career as a law student so you will want to remember it.  For more information on the CalNet ID, please visit https://calnetweb.berkeley.edu/calnet-me

After you have attended the mandatory computing orientation session, your CalNet ID will allow you to use the workstations in the Law Library Computer Lab, connect to AirBears2 (the campus wireless network), access a wide range of web-hosted resources and the online directory of Berkeley Law faculty, staff and students.

Computing Orientation
During your orientation you will attend a mandatory computing session.  Please bring your CalNet ID and passphrase to your orientation session.  You should also bring your laptop, if you own one, as we will be able to offer some initial assistance with AirBears2 wireless connectivity, and other technical issues.  You will also receive your Lexis, Westlaw and Bloomberg Law passwords during the computing orientation.

Email Account
Email is used by administrators to notify students of important deadlines.  Please read your email and respond to appropriate administrators as necessary. Email addresses are available to Berkeley Law faculty, staff and students through our integrated directory.  You can find instructions on managing your bMail account at: bconnected.berkeley.edu.

Please take note of the following resources as they may become useful in your preparation for the semester

  • Computer Recommendations / Computer Resource
The Law School does not have a laptop requirement but we strongly recommend that students have a laptop since there is  wireless connectivity throughout the law school and most exams are now offered on laptops.  The technology section of the campus Cal Student Store offers student discounts on PC-based hardware and software.  For discounts on Apple products go to http://www.apple.com/education/.
  • The Law Library also has a computer lab for the exclusive use of law students.
  • Financial Aid
For information about financial aid for purchasing a computer, please contact our Financial Aid office at financial-aid@law.berkeley.edu.
