SUMMARY:Can Countries Be Held Liable for Climate Change? Inside the ICJ’s Landmark Advisory Opinion
DESCRIPTION:In July 2025\, the International Court of Justice issued its landmark advisory opinion on states’ obligations in respect of climate change. The Court confirmed that international law requires states to protect the climate system\, and that failing to do so can trigger legal responsibility. More than a year later\, what has changed? Join ILS and BJIL for a conversation with four leading voices on the case and its future in courts\, negotiations and movements. \nSpeakers \n\nMs. Sun Young Hwang: Associate at Foley Hoag. She was a member of the Foley Hoag team that represented various states including The Gambia\, Malawi\, and Sierra Leone in the request for an advisory opinion from the ICJ on states’ obligations in respect of climate change.\nDr. Margaretha Wewerinke-Singh: Associate Professor of Sustainability Law at the University of Amsterdam. She led Vanuatu’s legal team before the ICJ.\nDr. Maria Antonia Tigre: Director of Global Climate Litigation at Columbia’s Sabin Center. She tracks rights-based climate cases and advisory opinions worldwide.\nAlbert Lalonde: A Montreal-based jurist\, organizer and filmmaker. Albert wrote a 2026 UN University paper on what the opinion means for future generations.\n\nRSVP here.

SUMMARY:Critical Foundations: Sociology of Law
DESCRIPTION:The criminal legal system we confront today is the product of nearly 1000 years of development during which new institutions\, new powers\, and new myths about crime and punishment have been installed in response to periodic crises originating in the political and economic conflicts of society. The result is a kind of carceral leviathan that can appear in many ways to suit the needs of the time and overcome moral and practical criticisms. In the lecture\, Professor Simon will review this history and how it continues to be relevant today to those seeking to reform or even abolish it. \nJonathan Simon graduated from Berkeley law with a JD and a PhD in the Jurisprudence and Social Policy program. Simon is the author of three books and many articles on the criminal legal system in the United States and its relationship to shifts in American society and democracy. He has been a professor at Berkeley Law since 2003. \nLunch will be served inside of Room 170 starting at 12:50 PM. RSVPs will be prioritized.

SUMMARY:[ASP] Memorization Strategies for Closed-Book Exams
DESCRIPTION:Closed book exams mean that your memory is your outline. In this workshop\, the ASP team will provide evidence-based strategies to help you retain and retrieve everything you need to know for exams. Think active recall and spaced repetition\, not reading and re-reading your casebook or outline. \nNo blanking mid-exam. Let’s make your outlines obsolete (in a good way). \nAll J.D. and LL.M. students are welcome to attend. A variety of snacks will be provided!  \nThis workshop will be offered twice\, on Monday\, October 19\, and Friday\, October 23. It will not be recorded\, but we would be happy to meet with you if you cannot attend or have questions. You can schedule a meeting here: BerkeleyLawASP.as.me. The slides are posted on the ASP website.

SUMMARY:CSLS Speaker Series: Terror on Trial: An Ethnography of French Courts (Cambridge University Press\, 2026)
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Sharon Weill\, Professor of International Law and Director of the Justice Lab\, The American University of Paris. \nAbstract: Grounded in court ethnography\, this book explores terrorism trials in France. A multidisciplinary research team examines how terrorism logics are reflected\, represented\, and negotiated within criminal proceedings. Based on hundreds of hearing days – ranging from small terrorism criminal cases to the so-called trials for history\, commonly known as the ‘Charlie Hebdo’ and the ‘Bataclan’ trials – this study offers a nuanced\, bottom-up perspective on the role of courts. Through courtroom immersion\, close observation of legal performances\, and interviews with judicial actors\, it investigates how justice is shaped in practice. Identifying three generations of trials\, the book provides original insights into the evolving role of courts in terrorism cases. From an empirical and comparative perspective\, it also seeks to make criminal trials of civil law systems more accessible to Anglophone readers\, offering a deeper understanding of how terrorism is prosecuted in France\, highlighting the role of judges\, prosecutors\, lawyers\, and victims. \nReception: Lunch 12:15-12:45p.m. in the Kadish Library\nProgram: 12:45-2:00p.m. in the Philip Selznick Seminar Room \n\n\nRegister for the livestream via Zoom. Registration is not required for in person attendance.\nAdd this event to your Google calendar. \nIf you require an accommodation for effective  communication (ASL interpreting/CART captioning\, alternative media formats\, etc.) to fully participate in this event\, please contact csls@law.berkeley.edu with as much advance notice as possible.
