Giovanni Buttarelli is serving a five-year term as European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), where he is tasked with ensuring that European institutions and bodies respect the right to privacy and data 
protection when they process personal data. The EDPS also advises European member states' data protection authorities and the European Parliament and Commission, making Buttarelli a key commentator and leader on European Privacy Law. A member of the Italian judiciary, Buttarelli has held several positions in government and teaches Privacy at Lumsa University.

Job Opportunity: Hiring Research Assistants for Professor Catherine Crump


Professor Catherine Crump is seeking research assistants to work on a variety of projects related to government surveillance. One project focuses on the role of Federal money in accelerating municipal law enforcement agencies’ adoption of surveillance technology, and the impact that path to acquisition is having on democratic control of police departments. Another focuses on the use of predictive algorithms in law enforcement investigations and in decision making regarding who is entitled to probation or parole. A third focuses on the impact of surveillance technology on the First Amendment right of association. Research tasks include legal research into relevant First and Fourth Amendment case law, researching relevant bodies of scholarly literature, factual research into municipal policies and procedures, and use of state and federal public records laws.
