BTLJ Lunch talk with Jake Heller, CEO of Casetext

BTLJ invites you to join us for a lunchtime discussion with the CEO and founder of Casetext, Jake Heller. Selected as one of Forbes’ 30 under 30 in 2014, Jake Heller is a 2010 graduate of Stanford Law School, where he served as President of the Stanford Law Review. After clerking in the First Circuit and working at Ropes & Gray in Boston, Jake started Casetext in 2013. Casetext is a free legal research and writing platform that is using crowdsourcing to tap the knowledge of the legal community.
During this off-the-record lunch talk, Jake will share why he left legal practice to start Casetext, what it is like to be an entrepreneur in an industry hesitant to change, and how Casetext is making the law free and understandable.

The Federal Trade Commission and the Future of Privacy and Data Security Regulation

Julie Brill, a member of the Federal Trade Commission since 2010, has been named the FTC's most important voice on Internet privacy and data security and a key player internationally. She will speak about the Internet of Things, big data and discrimination, privacy enforcement in a borderless economy, and the recent appeals court decision affirming the FTC's authority to regulate data security.

European Data Protection Supervisor Giovanni Buttarelli and Berkeley Law Professor Paul Schwartz

Giovanni Buttarelli is serving a five-year term as European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), where he is tasked with ensuring that European institutions and bodies respect the right to privacy and data
protection when they process personal data. The EDPS also advises European member states' data protection authorities and the European Parliament and Commission, making Buttarelli a key commentator and leader on European Privacy Law. A member of the Italian judiciary, Buttarelli has held several positions in government and teaches Privacy at Lumsa University.

She’ll also touch on her career as an in-house attorney and general counsel and the challenges she’s faced in helping to build today’s Silicon Valley.

The newly-created Center for Technology, Society & Policy at the School of Information is accepting proposals from students for research projects and fellowships concerning "engineering ethics; technology and well-being; infrastructure, standards and governance; and digital citizenship.” CTSP is seeking to "fund thoughtful and creative but concrete ideas to advance the state of knowledge, solve problems, and promote understanding” in the aforementioned areas. Job Opportunity: Hiring Research Assistants for Professor Catherine Crump
Professor Catherine Crump is seeking research assistants to work on a variety of projects related to government surveillance. One project focuses on the role of federal money in accelerating municipal law enforcement agencies’ adoption of surveillance technology, and the impact that path to acquisition is having on democratic control of police departments. Another focuses on the use of predictive algorithms in law enforcement investigations and in decision making regarding who is entitled to probation or parole. A third focuses on the impact of surveillance technology on the First Amendment right of association. Research tasks include legal research into relevant First and Fourth Amendment case law, researching relevant bodies of scholarly literature, factual research into municipal policies and procedures, and use of state and federal public records laws.
