Founded in 2000, the Berkeley Journal of Criminal Law is the primary criminal law review in the western United States. BJCL is at the core of Berkeley's vibrant criminal law community, which includes the Berkeley Center for Criminal Justice and an intellectual student body that is ideologically diverse but uniformly dedicated to excellence in criminal law. BJCL operates with the advisement of Boalt Hall faculty. The journal is available in print and on LexisNexis, Westlaw, and HeinOnline.

BJCL provides a vital forum for the discussion of regional, national and international criminal law issues.  The scholarship of professors, judges, research fellows, clerks, and students from some of the best law schools in the country has been published during the initial years of the Journal's existence.   The journal also welcomes submissions from practitioners.

In May 2007, the Berkeley Center for Criminal Justice hosted Boalt Hall's first criminal law symposium.   BJCL will be editing and publishing the scholarship showcased at the symposium in a new Symposium Issue in Fall 2007.   BCCJ plans to continue hosting a symposium each summer, and BJCL will publish the resultant scholarship in a corresponding, annual Symposium Issue.

BJCL also is proud to announce the launch of the California Annual Review in spring 2008.   The Review will survey five areas of California criminal law and policy: recent cases; statutes and propositions; policy; law enforcement; and corrections and rehabilitation.

In addition to its new, annual Symposium Issue and California Annual Review, BJCL will continue to publish its general fall and spring issues each year.

We look forward to continuing as a trusted, timely source for academics, jurists, practitioners, students, and others interested in criminal law and policy.

Submissions

BJCL welcomes submissions from professors, practitioners, research fellows, clerks, and judges.

BJCL is one of the first legal journals to have instituted a Faculty Advisory Committee, which reviews articles we accept for publication. If you publish with our journal, you will have the benefit of peer review of your scholarship by leading criminal law faculty at Boalt Hall.
