Visiting Scholars

Who They Are
Visiting Scholars are people with law degrees who come here to do research, usually from abroad, for more than 30 days. They do not teach at Boalt. They ordinarily conduct their research entirely on their own, but some will occasionally discuss their project with a faculty member and some will even work closely with faculty. An operational definition of these visitors is simply that they formally are invited by the Associate Dean, under the Visiting Scholars Program administered by Francisca Cazares (354 Boalt, 510/ 642-1476). Approximately 50 Visiting Scholars are admitted to the Program each year.

How They Are Invited
Visiting Scholars must apply to the Program through the Visiting Scholars Office. Applicants must fill out a form describing their research project. (Upon request, the necessary forms can be send by fax on a rush basis.) The Associate Dean reviews all applications and either approves or denies them based on the following three criteria: The applicant is (i) a full-time regular faculty member at a law school; or (ii) a judge with a substantial research project; or (iii) someone with a law degree whom a member of our faculty states he or she would like to work with or is willing to supervise.

Role of Boalt Faculty
Boalt faculty cannot admit people to the Visiting Scholars Program, that is the role of the Associate Dean. Interested people should be advised to request an application form from the Visiting Scholars Office. However, if faculty want to work with an applicant that will make a strong case that he or she should be admitted, since that is one of the criteria for admission.

Privileges
Acceptance into the Visiting Scholars Program entities participants to a "blue card" which is issued by the Berkeley Campus. With this card, Visiting Scholars may use all campus library facilities, including the Law Library, and may take books out overnight. In the Law Library, Visiting Scholars also have access to Lexis and Westlaw. They do not get any assigned work or book storage space.

Visiting Scholars may pay a fee to use campus sports facilities, and they may obtain a campus, not a law school, email account. As of now, these email accounts are accessible at Evans Hall and in the North Addition Reading Room in the Law Library. Choose the following link for information on how to connect to the Internet while at Boalt Hall. Visiting Scholars are allowd to use the public access computers in the library reading room, but are not allowed to use the Computer Lab in the library, nor can they receive any computer or technical assistance from our computer or library staff. (We do have a list of computer consultants who will work with them on a fee-paying basis.) They may not use Boalt's private photocopiers but may use the public commercial copying service in the Library. Faculty are encouraged to be helpful, in limited ways, to our Visiting Scholars, which may include agreeing to their auditing classes. Otherwise, Visiting Scholars receive no resources or support from the School.

Fees
Each Visiting Scholar must pay a $200 fee to the Berkeley Campus. A $400 fee is paid to the Law School for each full semester spent here. This fee can be reduced for shorter visits, and may be waived in special circumstances by the Associate Dean.
