Guest Scholars

Who They Are
Guest Scholars are visitors who, like Visiting Scholars, want to do research at Boalt but will be here for 30 days or less. There are to be no exceptions: If a visitor is to be here for more than 30 days he or she must apply and be accepted as a Visiting Scholar (or fit into some other category).

How They Are Invited
A person who wishes to check books out overnight must have a faculty member vouch for him or her and then must be formally approved as a Guest Scholar by the Associate Dean. The faculty member should contact the Associate Dean and request the Guest Scholar status for the person. The Associate Dean then informs Patty Heard in the library, and Patty will issue a pink card (with a 30-day expiration date) to the Guest. Patty will not register someone on a faculty member's say-so without first checking with the Associate Dean. Patty will so advise faculty members making such requests.

Role of Boalt Faculty
Faculty members may invite people to be Guest Scholars so long as they are willing to vouch for them to obtain Law Library privileges from the Associate Dean. The faculty member may feel free to tell an applicant that he or she will be admitted as a Guest Scholar -- if and only if the faculty member notifies the Associate Dean of this. Informing the Library of the decision to admit is not for the faculty member but only for the Associate Dean.

Privileges
There is only one privilege. Guest Scholars can take books out of the Law Library overnight. Unlike Visiting Scholars, Guest Scholars cannot take books out of the campus libraries, cannot use the sports facilities, do not have access to the campus email system, and receive no space or computer support from Boalt. If a faculty member wants to obtain any of these resources for someone, the faculty member would have to go through the process that applies to another category.

Fees
There is no fee charged by the campus or by Boalt to Guest Scholars.
