Getting Started

Office Space
In the event that you are a visiting faculty member who will be teaching at Boalt Hall, an office with a computer will be provided. Certain other senior visiting faculty will be provided with an office at the discretion of the dean and on a space available basis. Unless you have been informed otherwise, we cannot provide office space to other visitors. In exceptional circumstances Visiting Scholars have qualified, after arrival here, for a study carrel in a specialized center in the Law School. Likewise, we cannot offer computer facilities or secretarial support to visitors.

If you have been assigned an office, you should check in either with the faculty member who invited you, or with the Law and Economics Program office at 793 Simon Hall, (510) 642-0503. We will either take you, or guide you to 193 Boalt Hall where keys will be issued to you.

If you need to use a copier, please check with the Law and Economics office at 793 Simon Hall and someone will assist you, or authorize you to use a copier. If you need to use a fax machine, there is one located in the Law and Economics office in 793 Simon Hall.

Law Library
The Law Library at the School of Law is one of the leading research-oriented libraries in the United States. Officially recognized visitors to Boalt Hall may use this library. We recommend that you check with either the faculty member who has sponsored you, or with the Law and Economics Program office at 793 Simon Hall (510), 642-0503. We will put you in touch with Kathleen Vanden Heuvel, the Associate Director of the Library in Room 216 Boalt (510) 643-9147, who will be able to make arrangements for you to have access to the library. More information is available at the Law Library website: www.law.berkeley.edu/library.

Payroll Information
If you will be paid for teaching at the Law School you will need to see Leonor Clelo in room 201 Boalt Hall (510) 643-9701. She will have the appropriate paperwork for you to complete. If you will be paid an honorarium or receive any kind of reimbursement from the Law School, you must see either Jeanette Sayre or Chris Swain in the Law and Economics Program office at 793 Simon Hall, (510) 642-0503.

Auto and Health Insurance
If you need auto insurance, we recommend that you call California Casualty Insurance Co., (800) 800-9410, which has a contract to offer insurance to people associated with the university. Tell them you would like to create a new account. Depending on your status, they may, or may not be able to help you. If they cannot, you will have to use the phone book and call local insurance agents and find the best offer for you.

All official visitors to the university are required to have health insurance. The University has various health insurance plans that are offered to visitors. Please call (510) 642-7233 or visit the Tang Center at 2222 Bancroft Way for more information. You may also check the University Health Service website at: www.uhs.berkeley.edu.

Law School Events of Interest to Visitors
There are always many seminars, classes, lectures and presentations at the Law School focusing on law generally, and law and economics specifically, that a visitor may wish to attend.

To find out when a seminar or class meets, you may inquire at the Law School Registrar's Office, 270 Boalt Hall, (510) 642-2278. You may also obtain a complete schedule of law school classes from the Registrar. Most of this information can be obtained from the Registrar's web site at: www.law.berkeley.edu/students/registrar.

The Calendar of Events at the Law School can be found online at www.law.berkeley.edu/news. This calendar lists all non-classroom events such as student programs, lectures, bag lunches, and workshops scheduled at the Law School. You may also pick up a copy of the Law School Catalogue, which explains the Law School's programs and policies and a Primer which give a short biographical sketch of the faculty and staff at the Law School.

Law and Economics events occur regularly at the Law School. Check with Jeanette in the Law and Economics office at 793 Simon Hall, (510) 642-5406 for all the details and to pick up papers and other materials which may be available. The Law and Economics Seminar meets weekly throughout the academic year and features speakers from around the world.
