Lesson 3: Editing Text

Step 1: Changing the Font and Text Sizes

• First, we will change the text from Times New Roman (the Dreamweaver default font) to Arial. To do this:

1. Select all the text by going to Edit > Select All.
2. Change the font to Arial by choosing "Arial" in the Fonts menu on the Toolbar.

• Next, we will change the size of the text from the Dreamweaver default of 3 to 2.

1. Make sure all of the text is still selected and then choose "2" from the Size menu, also on the Toolbar.

2. To make the header/title of the page stand out more, we will increase its size to 4. To do this, first highlight the text "Federal Statutes" at the top of the page and choose "4" from the Size menu on the Toolbar.

Step 2: Changing the Font Color

• To help differentiate the header/title even more, we will make it a different color. To change the color of the header:

1. Highlight the text "Federal Statutes" again.
2. On the Toolbar to the right of the Size dropdown, there is a little box with a black arrow in it. Click on the little black arrow and a color palette will appear.
3. Choose the dark blue that is 4 colors across and 3 down, with the name "#000066".

Step 3: Bolding and Italicizing

• We want to bold the various subheadings of the page as well as phrases we want to stand out. We will also want to change the size of the subheadings to make them stand out more.

1. To bold the subheadings, first highlight the text, starting with "Slip Laws", and click on the "B" button in the Toolbar.

2. Continue doing this for the rest of the subheadings ("Advance Session Law Services", "Statutes at Large", and "United States Code (U.S.C)") as well as for the phrase "Public Law 92-195" at the end of the Slip Laws paragraph.
3. Change the size of the subheadings to 3.

• We also want to italicize the following pieces of text by highlighting them and clicking on the "I" button (next to the Bold "B" button) on the Toolbar:
– United States Code Congressional and Administrative News (in the Advance Session Law Services section)
– United States Code Service (also in the same section)
– United States Statutes at Large (in the Statutes at Large section)
and the following lines at the bottom of the page:
– United States Code Service
– United States Code Annotated

Step 4: Adding Bulleted Lists

• We will now change the contents listing of the page to a bulleted list.

1. Highlight the contents listing at the top of the page, from "Slip Laws" to "Annotated Code".

2. Click on the Bullet button on the Toolbar. Doing so will add bullets to the front of the list and indent it. Note: If only the first line is becomes bulleted, you will have to press "Enter" at the beginning of each line for the other bullets to appear. (Tip: To create a numbered list instead, click on the Number button next to the Bullet button.)

Step 5: Indenting Text

• We will now indent the text for each of the subsections.

1. Highlight the paragraph/section under Slip Laws, from "The first..." to "...at Thomas."
2. Click on the Text Indent button on the Toolbar. The text should now all be indented.

2. Repeat these steps for the other subsections (Advance Session Law Services, Statutes at Large, and United States Code).
