The first conference on the Supreme Court of California will be held by UC Berkeley School of Law on Friday, November 14, 2008 from 9:00 am
to 6:15 pm at the Clark Kerr Conference Center, UC Berkeley.
The California Constitution and the Supreme Court of California provide fertile ground for scholarly study. The decisions of the Supreme Court of California are of great importance not just to the citizens of the state, but to the nation at large.
This Conference will provide a unique forum for judges, government officials, scholars, and practitioners to discuss the work of the courts and to learn more about legal issues affecting the judicial system in California. It will facilitate and expand public understanding of the Supreme Court of California’s work and identify important legal and constitutional developments. .
The proceedings will address the following issues in four plenary sessions:
- Review of the Supreme Court of California’s 2007-08 Term
- The Death Penalty and the Appellate Process
- Arbitration and Private Judging
- Access to Justice in Family Court
The four plenary sessions will be moderated by Justice Kathryn Werdegar, Associate Justice of Supreme Court of California, Justice Carol A Corrigan, Associate Justice of Supreme Court of California, Justice Ming W. Chin, Associate Justice of Supreme Court of California and Justice Marvin R. Baxter, Associate Justice of Supreme Court of California, respectively.
The proceedings will be followed by a reception and dinner featuring an address by Ronald M. George, Chief Justice of California. The reception is co-sponsored by the California Supreme Court Historical Society.
The keynote address at the inaugural session will be presented by Pete Wilson, Former Governor of California. Remarks will also be made by Christopher Edley, Jr., Dean of UC Berkeley School of Law, Jesse H. Choper, Earl Warren Professor of Public Law and Former Dean of UC Berkeley School of Law, Holly J. Fujie, President of the Bar of the State of California Shareholder, Buchalter Nemer, Jeffrey Bleich, Immediate Past-President of the Bar of the State of California and Partner, Munger, Tolles & Olson
Registration fee is $275 with discounts for government/non-profit organizations and students.
