Joshua Walker is Counsel at the Palo Alto office of Simpson Thacher &
Bartlett LLP (“STB”) and a Lecturer at Boalt. Walker leads the IP
Transactions Group for STB Silicon Valley. He specializes in strategic
analysis of intellectual property, covering all aspects of IP: from
transactional risk/value assessment; to tactical litigation analysis; to
strategic business advice.
Mr. Walker is widely considered a pioneer in the fields of patent risk
valuation and legal informatics. He was the founding Executive Director
of the first law and computer science lab in the United States, at
Stanford University, and the founding CEO of Lex Machina, Inc., the most
advanced IP litigation solution of its time. Mr. Walker has assisted
members of the U.S. Judiciary, the White House Office Science &
Technology Policy, and myriad technology companies with complex IP
problems. He teaches IP Analytics, Strategy & Decision-Making at Boalt.
Mr. Walker joined STB in 2012 and commenced teaching at Boalt in 2013.
He received his A.B. from Harvard University, magna cum laude, in 1995
and his J.D. from the University of Chicago in 2002, where he was a
Cornerstone Scholar. Prior to law school, Mr. Walker served as acting
Intelligence Analyst for the National Team investigation unit at the
International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda, where he assisted in the
successful investigation and prosecution of numerous orchestrators of
the Rwandan genocide. He is a member of the California Bar and the Bar
of the Supreme Court of the United States.
