R. Shanti Brien grew up in the Central Valley of California and attended the University of California at Berkeley. She graduated in 1994 with Highest Honors and Distinction. She graduated from Stanford Law School in 1999.

In 1999 she joined the preeminent New Orleans, Louisiana firm of Stone, Pigman, Walther and Wittmann, L.L.P. where she practiced civil litigation. In 2000, she assisted in the successful appeal to the Fifth Circuit in Pizza Hut, Inc. v. Papa John's Intern., Inc. 227 F.3d 489 (5th Cir.2000).

Since 2003, Ms. Brien has focused on criminal appeals and other post conviction proceedings in California state and federal courts and the Ninth Circuit. Published victories include In re Deshaun M., 148 Cal.App.4th 1384 (2007) and United States v. Alaimalo 645 F.3d 1042 (9th Circuit 2011). Ms. Brien also handles prisoner civil rights litigation on a pro bono basis.

Recently Ms. Brien was featured in the American Bar Association’s book, The Road to Independence: 101 Women's Journeys to Starting Their Own Law Firms (2011, ABA Commission on Women in the Profession).
