This course examines the law of proof, with special attention to the Federal Rules of Evidence. Topics include relevance, hearsay, character evidence, authentication, competency, impeachment and rehabilitation, expert witnesses, scientific evidence, presumptions, and judicial notice.
Professor Geoffrey F. Brown started his legal career in the San Francisco Public Defender`s Office where he was a trial deputy from 1971-1979. While at the Public Defender's Office he tried a wide range of criminal cases, from misdemeanors to death penalty cases, and briefed and argued cases on appeal. In 1979 he was elected Public Defender of San Francisco and re-elected five times without opposition. In 2001 Governor Davis appointed Brown to the California Public Utilities Commission, where he served as a Commissioner until 2007. From 2007 to 2010 Brown was Dean of John F. Kennedy`s School of Law, where he continues to teach Evidence and Criminal Procedure. He has also taught Evidence and Criminal Procedure at other Bay Area law schools.
