This course provides a general overview of laws affecting the traditional family unit, composed of a husband and wife, and their children, those applicable to family units composed of a same-sex couple and their children, and family units in which the adult partners live in unmarried or unregistered cohabitation. It covers laws governing family formation (marriage; domestic partnerships/civil unions, living together) the birth or adoption of children; and family dissolution by divorce or death. It does not cover related subjects such as marital property, but it does cover spousal and child support. Emphasis is on an analysis of the policies underlying these laws. There are no prerequisites for this course.
