Too often gender is treated as a static, individual characteristic rather than as a social construction. This course draws on the rich empirical research in the law and society tradition to explore law's role in the construction of gender. This literature spans a range of quantitative and qualitative methodologies and draws on comparative as well as American perspectives. The course incorporates theoretical perspectives drawn from sociology, law and society, and feminist theory. Our focus will be empirical research from a variety of disciplines rather than legal doctrine. Graduate students from all disciplines are welcome. The writing requirement may be satisfied through this course by special arrangement with the instructor.
