This course will explore lies and how they are treated by the law.
Topics will include why and when lying is wrong, when lying is
criminal and when it should be criminal, prosecutions for perjury and
false statements, lies by the police in undercover investigations and
in interrogations, lies in commercial transactions, and the tension
between the lawyer's duty of candor and the lawyer's duties of loyalty
and confidentiality. Grades will be based on class participation and
on weekly response papers.
