This course will examine the history and evolution of corrections in US. Developments in CA will be contrasted with national trends and the experiences of other large states such as NY. TX, FL, among others. We will review major federal and state court decisions that are currently impacting the corrections system. Guest speakers will include lawyers for plaintiffs and defendants. Current policy proposals to reform the corrections system based on task forces, expert panels, professional associations and advocacy groups will be explored. Students will consider judicial. executive branch and legisalative options to corrections issues in the near future. The students will hear the perpectives of law enforcement officials, probation leaders, judges, formerly incarcerated people, and victim advocates.
Prerequisites:
I would prefer that the students have already taken a course on Constitutional Law but this is not a mandate
