This is a basic trial advocacy skills course, focusing on factual and legal preparation for trial, evidence and evidentiary objections, introduction of exhibits, direct examination, cross-examination, opening statements, closing arguments, and courtroom communication skills. Class sessions consists of weekly student performances of trial exercises, and a lecture on a trial component. There will be assigned reading and videotape viewing outside of class. The course culminates in a half-day jury trial. This class is NOT suitable for those who have already completed a similar class on trial skills.

INSTRUCTOR:
Mary Pat Dooley has been teaching trial advocacy classes at Boalt Hall Law School since 1999. She is presently a judicial staff attorney for the Honorable Carol Corrigan at the California Supreme Court. After clerking in federal district court following law school, she was a prosecutor for more than ten years with the Alameda County District Attorney's Office, and was a litigation associate at Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe in San Francisco. She has been a faculty member with the National Institute of Trial Advocacy (NITA) since 1996.

Prerequisites:
While completion of Evidence or concurrent enrollment in Evidence is not required, it is highly recommended.
