This seminar will explore interrogation practices and confession law and policy. Topics may include (among others) the psychology of police interrogation; religious confession; police training and regulation of police interrogation; the voluntariness doctrine; the history, function and future of the Miranda rule; false confessions; videotaping; and police practices (and the role of confessions) in some other countries.

The readings will be from the required text and supplemental materials made available by the insructor.

A paper is required. In addition to completing the readings and participating in class discussions, students will present their research.

Please note: This course was previously taught in Fall 2009 under the title "Advanced Topics."

Prior or concurrent enrollment in Criminal Procedure-Investigations is preferred but is not required.
