The purpose of this course is to give students a basic understanding of the major themes in the legal regulation of elections and politics. We will cover major Supreme Court cases on topics of voting rights, reapportionment/redistricting, ballot access, regulation of political parties, campaign finance, and the 2000 presidential election controversy. In addition to examining doctrine, we will focus attention on competing political philosophies and empirical assumptions underlying the Law of Democracy. Finally, this class will include an optional session for those considering pursuing an academic career that will be oriented toward learning how to write for publication and navigating a path toward an academic job.
This course may satisfy the Writing Requirement.
