This 4-unit course is designed to introduce all students ( J.D., LL.M., J.S.P., and J.S.D.) to the use of statistics in law. Statistics is a core aspect of the evidence presented in such disparate areas of the law as paternity suits and antitrust litigation, employment discrimination and products liability, DNA evidence and securities fraud, witness identification and environmental crimes. In all of these areas of the law, and many more, statistics is a core part of interpretation of evidence. Statistics is also an indispensable part of jury selection. The course will survey statistical concepts used in such cases, with a particular eye towards illuminating the assumptions under-girding statistical approaches and training students to recognize when those assumptions will be plausible and when they will be controversial. The course does not require any particular mathematical background and aims to develop in students both skill and comfort in working with statistical evidence.
