This 2-unit seminar will explore girls and womens involvement in the California juvenile and criminal justice systems, using case law, state and federal legislation, and empirical research. It will examine girls and women as victims and perpetrators of crime, including what crimes they are typically involved in, and what causes this involvement. Rape, domestic violence, trafficking, and prostitution will be covered, including the story of how rape victimization ignited the victims rights movement.

The class will study gender inequality within the juvenile and adult criminal justice systems. It will look at issues for girls and women arising at arrest, charging, trial, and sentencing, including the death penalty. It will also examine issues arising during incarceration, including the impact on mothers and children, alternatives to incarceration, obtaining release on parole, and re-entry after being locked up.

The increasing number of women who are employed by the criminal justice system and the role of women as key policy makers will also be reviewed.

Solutions to issues of inequitable and illegal treatment of women and girls will be discussed, including prevention, legislation, litigation, use of media, and organizing both inside and outside locked facilities. We will conclude with a vision of a gender responsive criminal and juvenile justice system.

The teachers are Nancy K. D. Lemon and Barry Krisberg, each of whom has decades of professional experience with these topics. Students will have the option of taking a final examination or writing a research paper.
