This course explores the jurisdiction of American federal courts, and the manner in which this jurisdiction interacts with federalism and separation of powers. Topics include the constitutional and statutory sources of judicial power; Congressional control of the distribution of judicial power; Supreme Court review of state court decisions; the law applied in civil actions in the federal district courts; the original jurisdiction of the district courts; habeas corpus; and various forms governmental immunities.

Prerequisites:
Prior completion of at least one of the the following courses is strongly encouraged, but not required:

1. Constitutional Law
2. A Civil Procedure course that addresses the jurisdiction of federal courts.
