Imagine a confrontation between an Arizona legislator who vigorously supports that state���s new law regarding undocumented immigrants, and a civil rights activist who attributes that law���s popularity to resurgent xenophobia. Soon, accusations of racism begin to fly. But who is the racist? Is it the legislator, demagogically pandering to an anxious white electorate? She bridles at the suggestion, holding up Martin Luther King, Jr. as a personal hero. Or is it the activist, recklessly playing the race card? He���s outraged, having spent his life fighting racial oppression. Maybe ���racism��� isn���t involved at all���or if it is, would it nevertheless be better to avoid this tendentious word in favor of a term with more political traction, say ���civil rights��� or ���opportunity���? This seminar focuses on New Racial Studies, a vague catchall intended to signal a focus on contemporary racial dynamics and their likely short-term trajectory. Using student-lead conversations to explore readings from a variety of disciplines, this seminar will examine the interplay of race and wealth, whiteness, colorblindness, post-racialism, and the place of Latinos within the U.S. racial order. There is no prerequisite, but familiarity with racial studies would be helpful. This seminar overlaps only slightly with Race and American Law, and the two may be taken concurrently. A fifteen-age final paper is required.
