The Samuelson Law, Technology & Public Policy Clinic gives students hands-on training while providing a new voice for the public interest. The clinic aims to serve as the public's voice in legal and regulatory disputes presently dominated by lobbyists and the government.
Through the clinic, students file friend-of-the-court briefs, comment on proposed legislation and regulations, and provide legal assistance in matters that raise important issues relating to law and technology. The clinic represents consumer interests in intellectual property, communications regulation and privacy issues.
The clinic, which operates much like a practice group in a law firm, provides students with real-world experience. Not only does the clinic offer the unparalleled opportunity to learn about lawyering, government institutions and the complexities involved in technology-related law, it also provides representation to individuals, nonprofits and consumer groups that could not otherwise obtain counsel. In addition, by working with law firms and legal service providers, the clinic helps develop and coordinate pro bono efforts while establishing itself as a public interest leader in the technology field.
Because this course allows students to practice law with real clients under the supervision of clinical faculty, it's workload is structured differently than most classes. Students are expected to work on their projects every week for an average of up to 16 hours per week. This will weekly meetings with your supervisor as well as a separate meeting with your teammates.
In recognition of this workload, there is no final for this course.
