This course is designed for students with little or no background in business or finance. We will explore how financial decisions are made, particularly with regard to the acquisition and financing of long-lived assets to be used in business or to be acquired for investment. We will explore notions of present value, future value, net present value, internal rates of return, financial management rates of return, etc., in evaluating alternative investment and business strategies. We will also study choice of capital – equity, debt, hybrid – issues in connection with analyzing how and where money should be sought and obtained. Lastly, we will focus on valuing debt and equity securities: bonds, preferred stock, common stock , risk/reward analysis, how the market responds to systemic and specific types of risks. This course is a natural companion to Accounting for Lawyers and may be taken before or after Accounting for Lawyers.
