This 3-unit, Professional Responsibility satisfying class, examines the legal rules governing lawyers and the relationship between lawyers' obligations under the law and their broader ethical duties as members of society and the legal profession. The class will pay attention to a range of practice settings, from solo practice to the big firm, and various types of practice, including public interest litigation, plaintiffs' contingency fee work, class actions, criminal prosecution and defense, business transactions, and general litigation. Students can choose between (i) taking an in-class exam with a choice among several essay questions or (ii) writing a 30-page paper on the legal profession or legal ethics. Students who have taken Law 210 may not receive credit for this course. It is possible to satisfy the writing requirement in this class, although in that event the student's paper will need to satisfy the special rules relating to the writing requirement (which among other things, requires a longer paper).
This course satisfies the Professional Responsibility Requirement.
This course may satisfy the Writing Requirement.
