This course compares the different legal traditions and normative cultures, focusing, on the one hand, on topics such as conflict between tradition and modernity, customary law, codification, political structures and ideologies, legal transplants, as well as social and cultural institutions, and, on the other hand, on a series of issues both in private law and in public law. Including judicial systems. Emphasis will be placed on the comparison between the constitutional and legal experience of Latin American states, post-colonial Africa and Western European countries in order to explore the advent and development of the legal systems of the modern age.

Students will write one final paper (approximately 20 pages) and may choose to expand it in order to fulfill the writing requirement. No prerequisites.
