The law of world trade is of great significance to the operation of the global economy. It also increasingly understood to intersect and even conflict with other legal and normative domains, from human rights to the environment to labor standards. This seminar is designed to provide students with a basic knowledge of world trade law and to investigate key contemporary issues that have emerged in this domain. The course will begin with an overview of the World Trade Organization, including its institutional configuration and its rules on trade in goods, services, and intellectual property. The second half of the class (roughly) will be devoted to discussing critical issues in world trade law. Topics will include the relationship of the WTO to other international legal regimes, questions of access to medicines as they intersect with intellectual property law, issues of environmental protection and world trade, and questions of labor rights and world trade.
The weekly class sessions will involve a mix of lecture and seminar-style discussion. There are two class sessions per week reserved for the class, but that is for administrative purposes only. The fixed class meeting each week will be Weds. between 5:20 and 7:10. The Monday sessions are being reserved for outside speakers, but we will only use 6-7 of them during the semester. Thus, the course requirements are one weekly class session, and a Monday meeting approximately every other week involving outside speakers, for a total of 3 credit units.
