This three-unit, PR-credit-satisfying, class explores the law and ethics of lawyering. We will focus on attributes of the attorney-client relationship, the roles attorneys play, and the institution that shape lawyers' conduct and lives. I hope you gain a sense of what the legal profession has to offer you, and vice versa. Students can choose between (i) taking an in-class exam with some multiple choice questions and an issue spot essay question, or (ii) writing a 25-page paper on the legal profession or legal ethics. The paper cannot satisfy the Writing Requirement. Students who have taken similar courses are welcome.

You will need a copy of the ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct and the California Rules of Professional Conduct. You can buy a rules book, download the rules yourself, or ask me for an e-version of the Delaware Rules of Professional Conduct (which are identical to the ABA Model Rules).

If there is interest, there will also be a trial advocacy subsection. Eight students (selected from volunteers) will prepare and present a mock State Bar disciplinary trial. Subsection students must prepare for, attend, and participate in the lecture classes, but will not take the final exam. The weekly trial advocacy classes (about an hour or so before or after each lecture class, TBD) and the final trials (held the class before Thanksgiving break) are their "final." Subsection students and regular section students have separate grade curves.

This course satisfies the Professional Responsibility Requirement.
