This 2-credit, PR-credit-satisfying course will address the black letter "law of lawyering" (including the ethics rules) as it plays out in diverse practice settings of the students' choosing. Classes will be discussions of hypotheticals and non-fiction articles assigned to different groups of students (with cold-calling only for students assigned to prepare that exercise). Writing Requirement cannot be satisfied. Laptops are permitted but internet usage is banned. Attendance is required. Attendance and participation can earn a "bump" in grades. The final will be the student's choice between (1) an in-class, open-book, issue-spot exam, during which no internet access, collaboration, or cut-and-pasting of pre-existing text into your answer is permitted, and (2) a 20 page paper on some topic relating to the law of lawyering. The instructor will distribute (at no charge to students) his comprehensive outline of the ethics rules and law of lawyering, the ethics rules, and optional on-line lectures of black letter law. The course will not be geared toward the MPRE or bar exam, but the instructor's outline is designed for those purposes.

For over 15 years, the instructor was the chief internal ethics lawyer at an AmLaw 100 and an AmLaw 200 law firm. He served on COPRAC (the State Bar of California's standing committee on ethics and professional responsibility) and has taught legal ethics as an adjunct for about 30 semesters at a variety of schools. He is the co-founder of a leading blog on legal ethics: Legal Ethics Forum (www.legalethicsforum.com).

This course satisfies the Professional Responsibility Requirement.
