Berkeley prides itself on graduating leaders who will serve in their fields - law, business, government - yet also lead in their cities and states and even lead their countries. Often these leaders are prepared to thrive in their particular fields yet have limited understanding of the true nature of the other fields and how those fields align and meet. Business’ power continues to rise abetted by Supreme Court decisions that have solidified corporations as free speaking (and big spending) “persons.” Yet, while Americans mythologize business leaders and entrepreneurship they have also chosen not to be led by corporate leaders (e.g., Checci, Whitman, Fiorina - perhaps more in the year ahead) who seek to lead in the public realm. We love the efficiency of ROI yet instinctively fear its usefulness in building the common good.

Meanwhile we love the idea of democracy yet seem to despise the way it functions. Business leaders live in a realm of practicality, risk and negotiation, and wonder why Washington is all about “gridlock,” vicious stalemates that would kill their businesses in a heartbeat. Does business have some things to teach here? How are they better engaged?

This course sets out to first understand how the two main sectors of government and for-profit business are similar to each other, the ways they are vastly different, and then how they together face a confluence of critical, shared issues. Participants will emerge with a better sense of the limits of the ideologies and practices of their own fields as well as a greater understanding of how their counterpart sectors both function and malfunction.

In addition to the substance of the course, we will also teach different pedagogical/analytical approaches to problem understanding and learning (e.g., debate, appreciative inquiry, "thinking like a lawyer"). The course will seek to seat an equal number of law, business, and public policy students. There will be a high-level expectation that students will be active learners and often play the role of teachers to their counterparts across disciplines.
