This seminar will offer an opportunity to obtain an overview of the Law of the Sea in all its aspects, together with directed research and writing on a topic relating to ocean governance. The focus of the weekly discussions of will be on the UN Law of the Sea Convention and ocean policies, including such topics as piracy and terrorism at sea, biodiversity and ecosystem issues in ocean and coastal law, shipping and navigation, dispute settlement (especially in the International Tribunal for Law of the Sea and the ICJ), fisheries and seabed mining regulation and sustainable management, nuclear issues, and current-day confrontations in areas such as the South China Sea. Papers will be eligible for the Writing Requirement. Students wishing to obtain a third unit for purposes of additional research on papers for the Writing Requirement or journal publication should also register for one unit of Law 299. Several visiting experts from practice, government organizations, and the academic world are scheduled to make special presentations and generally will meet individually with students in the seminar to discuss their research and/or career plans.

This course may satisfy the Writing Requirement.
