Boalt Professors Weigh In on Supreme Court Nomination
Professors Goodwin Liu and John Yoo recently offered differing viewpoints on President Bush's nomination of John Roberts to the U.S. Supreme Court. Yoo's piece, “High Court Peace Offering,” (registration required) appeared in the Washington Post on July 21. Liu's op-ed, “ Roberts Would Swing the Supreme Court to the Right,” ran on Bloomberg.com on July 22.

In his piece, Liu characterizes Roberts as a “conservative thoroughbred” and outlines his belief that Roberts’ confirmation will swing the court to the right. In contrast, Yoo believes President Bush “came as close as possible to finding a non-ideological, consensus nominee who can also lay claim to being a Republican” and predicts that Roberts is most likely to follow the center of the court in its current direction.
