Luncheon Links Scholarship Recipients with Alumni Donors Meeting some of Boalt's distinguished alumni and supporters can be a bit daunting to a current law student. On Tuesday, November 8, close to 40 students and 20 donors gathered around circular tables at the Scholarship Luncheon to share stories about their experiences. This annual luncheon pairs students with the benefactors who provide scholarship funds awarded to the student. Robert Goodin '74, sponsor of the Vernon L. and Marion S. Goodin Scholarship, described how his father, Vernon '40, worked nights to support himself while at Boalt. As a result of his father's challenges juggling work and law school demands, Goodin decided to set up a scholarship in his parents' names so a current student wouldn't face the same hardship.
With tuition now topping more than $24,000 per year, students at the luncheon expressed heartfelt gratitude for the generosity of the alums. Three-time scholarship beneficiary Jason Balitzer '06, recipient of a Robert H. Cole Fellowship, talked passionately about Boalt and the opportunities the fellowship provided for him. Balitzer said he was inspired by his experience as a fellowship recipient. “I hope that 30 years from now, I'm sitting here with my own student” he said, referring to his goal to provide a future Boalt student with a scholarship once his career is established.
