Professor Holly Doremus Criticizes New Endangered Species Bill
In a commentary in The Christian Science Monitor, Visiting Professor Holly Doremus criticizes a bill passed this week by the House of Representatives that amends the federal Endangered Species Act and weakens protections for habitat critical to species recovery. Doremus agrees that it is indeed time to revisit the law, enacted in 1973. But she argues that the current House legislation amounts to little more than an effort to scuttle the act, and adds that it misses an opportunity for a "moderate" approach that could more fully engage private landowners and states in preserving endangered plants and animals.
