Center for Social Justice Hosts Conference on Welfare Reform
Boalt Hall's Center for Social Justice hosts "Whose Welfare? Income Transfers and Economic Justice" on Thursday, November 14 and Friday, November 15. The conference begins on Thursday at 4 p.m. with a lecture by Professor Peter Edelman titled "Beyond Welfare Reform: Economic Justice in the 21st Century." Currently a professor at the Georgetown University Law Center, Edelman is the former assistant secretary for planning and evaluation at the Department of Health and Human Services under President Clinton. He resigned in protest after Clinton signed the 1996 welfare reform bill. The talk, which is the annual Judge Mario G. Olmos Memorial Lecture, will take place in Booth Auditorium. A reception and book signing will follow in the Goldberg Room.

The conference will continue on Friday with a series of panels examining welfare from legal, economic, public policy and historical perspectives. Panel discussions will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Booth Auditorium. The lecture and the conference are free and open to the public. To listen to Peter Edelman speak on a recent broadcast of Forum, visit the KQED website. For more information, please contact Erin Campbell at 510-643-8010 or ecampbell@law.berkeley.edu.
