Robert Berring Named Interim Dean
UC Berkeley Chancellor Robert Berdahl has announced that Professor Robert Berring '74 will serve as the interim dean during the law school's search for a permanent dean. A Boalt Hall graduate, Berring has 20 years of teaching and administrative experience at the school. His appointment becomes effective January 1, following John Dwyer's recent announcement of his resignation.

As interim dean, Berring plans to work with Boalt's faculty, students and alumni to continue to fulfill the law school's enormous potential as one of the leading centers of legal education and scholarship in the nation.

"Robert Berring is the ideal person to lead the law school during the search for a permanent dean," Berdahl said. "He has substantial administrative experience, enjoys the widespread respect and trust of his colleagues and students, and has experience reaching out to alumni and other friends of the law school."

Dedicated to the teaching mission of the law school, Berring normally carries a full course load, including Advanced Legal Research—which he developed and is taken by more than half of all Boalt students. He was awarded UC Berkeley’s Distinguished Teaching Award in 1987. He also directs the McEnerney Law Library.

"I am honored to be selected for this interim position and I look forward to working with the Boalt Hall community to build on the law school’s strengths," said Berring. "As someone who has been privileged to be a student, faculty member and administrator here, I relish this opportunity to work with our faculty, students, staff and alumni."

A press release from the Chancellor’s office announcing Berring’s appointment is available on the campus web site. A related San Francisco Chronicle story is available online. For more information, contact Caroline Tobias Hagen at 510-642-4143 or chagen@law.berkeley.edu.
