Law Students Combat Threats to Online Expression
The Samuelson Law, Technology and Public Policy Clinic recently participated in launching a groundbreaking website that will empower Internet users with information about their online legal rights. Chillingeffects.org provides detailed information explaining how intellectual property laws and the First Amendment apply to online communications.
The site encourages users to submit cease-and-desist letters to a public database published on the site. Students will then review the letters, add comments by linking them to detailed FAQ's explaining the applicable legal rules, and provide links to news and other resources.
This innovative project was a collaboration with the Electronic Frontier Foundation and three other leading law school clinics. For more information about the project, visit www.chillingeffects.org.
