Winners Announced in McBaine Moot Court Competition
Hajir Ardebili '02 is the winner of the Best Oral Argument and Best Petitioner Brief Awards for this year's James Patterson McBaine Honors Moot Court Competition. A third-year student at Boalt, Ardebili graduated from the University of Kansas in 1999, earning a B.A. with honors in both Political Science and American Studies. Following graduation he will join the litigation practice at Greenberg Glusker Fields Claman Machtinger & Kinsella LLP in Los Angeles. Ardebili argued as petitioner against respondent Caryn Adams '03 in the final round of the competition. Anntim Vulchev '03 won the Best Respondent Brief Award. Vulchev graduated from UC Berkeley, earning a B.A. with honors in History with a concentration in Chinese. He is vice president of the Federalist Society.

The annual competition is open to all second- and third-year students and the winner is selected by a distinguished panel of judges. The students argued Brian B. v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Department of Education, a 3rd Circuit decision regarding educational services in correctional institutions. Arguments addressed whether or not the Constitution's Equal Protection Clause is violated by a Pennsylvania law providing full educational benefits to juveniles sentenced to state correctional institutions, but only minimal educational services to those confined to county facilities. Arguments were heard by Judges Procter Hug Jr. and Alex Kozinski of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, and Justice Kathryn Werdegar of the California Supreme Court.
