2002 Stories

Boalt Alumnus Carries Olympic Torch
Brigham Fordham ’01 was an Olympic torchbearer as part of the Salt Lake 2002 Olympic Torch Relay. He carried the torch, which was passed to him at about 2:45 p.m. on January 18, up 51st Street in Oakland, California, from Lawton Avenue to just below Telegraph Avenue. A number of people from the Boalt community showed up for the relay to cheer him on.

The Olympic torch passed through the hands of more than 11,000 people and traveled more than 13,500 miles through 125 cities in 46 states before arriving in Salt Lake City on February 8 for the start of the 2002 Winter Games. Torchbearers were selected by the Salt Lake Organizing Committee for the Olympic Winter Games of 2002. Last year, the committee sought nominations of individuals who embody the inspirational spirit of the Olympic movement.

Fordham, who currently works for Justice Christine M. Durham of the Utah Supreme Court, became involved in community service after sustaining an injury that left him a quadriplegic. He was informed of his selection to carry the Olympic torch by e-mail last fall.
