Documentary Highlights Clinic's Work to Bring Torturers to Justice
Students involved in Boalt's International Human Rights Law Clinic were featured along with clinic director Patty Blum in a documentary titled "Justice and the Generals." The film examines the 20-year saga to seek justice in the case of four American churchwomen raped and murdered in El Salvador.
Five Salvadoran National Guardsman were convicted of the 1980 murders, but families of the victims have long believed that the soldiers were acting on orders from their superiors. Now, with the assistance of the clinic, the victims' families and a group of torture survivors are bringing civil action against the two generals they believe ordered the murders. The generals are now living in Florida and will face trial in the United States.
The film aired Thursday, February 21, at 11 p.m. on PBS. For more information about "Justice and the Generals," visit www.pbs.org/wnet/justice/index.html. To read an article about the clinic's involvement in the case, visit http://www.berkeley.edu/news/berkeleyan/2002/02/14_lawcn.html.
